Day 10: LA and Hollywood
Lights! Camera! Action! The Sleepys go to Hollywood!!!
Today we wished a very happy birthday to Ethan Oxendine!
We started our day at 6:15 as we quickly packed the bus and
headed to the Hollywood Bowl. We had a traveling breakfast that included
delicious glazed donuts, cute cuties, and some juicy Hi-C’s. We arrived at the
Hollywood Bowl to find out that a rehearsal for an orchestra was taking place
so we were not able to tour it. However, we gathered around the sign and listened
to various research presentations. Beverly Hills, Hollywood by Mary-Charlotte Dusa, UCLA by Chris Bowmen, The Hollywood Bowl by
Baylee Bonner, Grauman’s Chinese Theater by Casey Kellogg, The Movie Studious
in Hollywood by Vivian Cline, Anaheim, California by Hannah Sherman, and
Disneyland by Kathryn Brennan and Caroline Royals.
After this, we had a screaming audition for our celebrity
prank which would take place in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Abby Brown,
Hannon Herring, Aidan Spelbring, Wilson Moore, and Dallas Cobb auditioned to be
the screamers. These contenders were to deliver a shrill, high-pitched shriek
that would attract the attention of numerous tourists. After the battle went
down, Abby and Aidan were declared the winners. We then loaded back onto the
bus and headed to the Theater.
When we arrived we walked around and looked at the hand and
footprints of famous people. In order to fully experience these prints we had
to initiate our celebrity prank. Our very own counselor, Daniel Calhoun, would
play the role of celebrity as Abby and Aidan attracted attention towards him.
It was decided that Daniel would be known as a star in the “Walking Dead” and
would also be starring in “Robin Hood” later this year. Once the tourists
focused their attention towards Daniel, we were able to take great pictures of
the hand and footprints without many tourists surrounding us. Once the prank
was over we were given free time to explore the Hollywood walk of stars and
shop for souvenirs.
At 11:30 we re-loaded and drove to UCLA. On the way to UCLA,
we drove down Sunset Boulevard and through Beverly Hills. We saw many expensive
cars and celebrity houses such as Emma
Watson’s, Daniel Radcliffe’s, and Jenifer Lawrence’s. We also rode past the
Beverly Hills Hotel and Bel-Air. We arrived at UCLA for our picnic lunch. The
Bashfuls prepared us a delightful lunch of chicken Caesar wraps. After lunch,
we walked around the UCLA campus. Many of us went to the bookstore to buy UCLA
merchandise and use the computers or iPads to call friends and family. At 2:15
we took a picture in front of the Bruin Bear and then listened to Dana Dixon, a
2015 participant and UCLA student, talk about the prestigious UCLA. After this,
we loaded the bus and drove to our campsite for the night at El Capitan State
Park.
On the way, we saw
beautiful landscapes of the ocean to our left and plenty of mountains to the
right. We arrived at our ocean and mountain-view campsite and set up for the
night. Some of us decided to hang out in our Enos while others played soccer,
explored the beach, and cooked. For dinner we had a fulfilling meal of double
dogs, baked beans, mac and cheese, and lemonade. Some innovated and put mac and
cheese on their hot dogs (scrumptious). After dinner some chose to shower while
others relaxed, cleaned dishes, and caught up on journaling. As the sun had
set, we grabbed our flashlights and headed towards the picnic tables to have a
sing along. We sang several songs including happy birthday to Ethan Oxendine
one last time and presented him with a gift. Lastly some showered while others
headed straight to bed. See ya’ tomorrow, the sleepys are tired.
Sleepys OUT.
