Day 11- Highway 1

Day 11: Highway 1

The Sleepy’s are back yet again to give you a little glimpse into the AMAZINGness that is this trip!!!!

The morning began when we were woken up with “WAKEY WAKEY, RISE AND SHINE, IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT DAY” at 5:45 at El Capitan. We caught glimpses of the ocean as we watched the sun rise while packing our stuff on the bus and vans. After that, the group quickly brushed teeth and got ready to witness the daylong drive along the Coastal Highway. We all hopped on the bus at 6:20 and were told that this stretch between El Capitan and Wally World was the only time we could nap due to the beautiful views that we would be seeing today during the drive. We got a quick shut-eye, an soon after we were woken up to bagpipes blaring “Amazing Grace” as we arrived to Wal-Mart.

Everyone jumped out of the vehicles and the cooks ran inside to begin purchasing and preparing our meals for the day. The rest of us took walking trips around Walmart (to increase that FitBit score), and bought the few necessities we needed. Soon after, the group reloaded the bus to drive up to Highway 1.

After we left, the cooks served our breakfast, which consisted of bagels with cream cheese and apples. We rode down the winding roads, as we looked one way to see the ocean and the other to see beautiful mountaintops. The sights were still amazing even with the infamous California smog. Those of us who get motion sickness were told to take medication due to the winding roads that reminded us of North Carolina mountain roads (but without the coast to the left).

As we drove along, we stopped at Ragged Point for a picture opportunity, bathroom break, and some pretty amazing views. While driving we passed Hearst Castle, which is similar to the Biltmore house, where we saw many animals - including zebras!!! Looking out of the bus windows we saw seals bathing in the sun and the sea.

We pulled over once more to take in the magnificent views that Highway 1 has to offer which included the breathing taking scenery of the ocean and TWB Mountain. The group took an extra second to share the moment with one another, and then got back on the bus and ate our lunch which was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels, and for dessert, Swiss Rolls. Yum!!!

The drive continued to be GORGEOUS as we continued to drive to Monterey! Once we reached our destination, we quickly jumped off the vehicles and walked around Cannery Row for an hour. Some went souvenir shopping, ate ice cream, and hung out on the beach.

Once the hour was up, we met back at the vehicles where the cooks loaded our dinner onto the vehicles we loaded on, and began our journey to THE San Francisco!!! The traffic heading out of Monterey was very heavy but we finally arrived to Lakeside Presbyterian Church in San Francisco around 7:50 PM. Penny and Jerry welcomed us to where we will be bunking for the next not one, but TWO nights here (yay for indoors!!!). We will be taking showers across the street at the local YMCA tonight. We will also combine laundry for the counselors to deliver to a laundry mat in the morning while we explore the big city!!! It will be hard to sleep tonight because we’re so excited for tomorrow, but we’ll do our best!!!
