Day 15: Salt Lake City and Bear Lake
Good afternoon!! The Sneezys are back and better than ever.
Today we woke up at a late 7:00 (it is CRAZY to think of
that as sleeping in) to the counselors blaring “Today is Gonna Be A Good Day.”
Once the Happys got our luggage loaded up, we enjoyed a breakfast of honey buns,
cuties, and apple juice. We then invaded the Mormons in Salt Lake City, Utah!
We were able to tour the Temple Square. Many of us started our tour by taking
photos of the surrounding statues (one of a seagull) and enjoyed the beautiful
weather while sitting on the benches. The sisters of the Mormon Church enlightened
us on the beliefs of the Latter Day Saints. The roof of the assembly hall
depicted Utah’s state flower. Fun fact- these flowers are poisonous unless
cooked properly. The significance behind this flower brings us back to the
struggle of survival endured by the Mormons of Utah, as they were faced with
starvation and cooked these flowers for food. We were in awe after learning of
the treacherous experiences that the Mormons had to endure during their days.
We also learned that the walls and pews were constructed from white pine wood.
This is an optical illusion because they painted the wood to look like other
objects. To our fascination, we learned that the Tabernacle’s does not need
microphones. Nine bridges that radiate sound constructed the building’s roof. The
experience was completed after an acoustic demonstration in the Tabernacle.
After each of the two groups finished their tours, we all
headed over to Creek City Mall in Salt Lake City. The Creek City Mall is the
largest mall in Utah! Many of us ventured over the Apple Store to contact over
friends and family. While face timing parents, some of us saw Ty Barrel (famous
actor in Modern Family). Others went to the Microsoft store to floss on Fortnite.
Vanessa Posada placed 26th in her first game! She’s a natural.
For lunch, we ate in the food court and some of us enjoyed
our first Chic-fil-a meal since we left Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. We
were not the only people in the food court; the world-class rubik’s cube
competitors joined us. These experts of their craft were capable of solving a
rubik’s cube in less than 10 seconds (woah). After lunch, we met back at the
bus and were not only greeting by counselors Daniel and John on the SAME
electric scooter (the BIRD). We were also excited to greet Grant and counselor
Katie’s husband (Matt) here to surprise her. Back on the bus, we continued our
journey onward to Wally world. This is where the Dopeys gathered our meals for
tonight and tomorrow and others got souvenirs and supplies. We continued on to
our final destination of Bear Lake after a giant group hug in the middle of the
entrance of Walmart.
We soon arrived to our campsite where the Dopeys began to prepare
our meal for the night: fettuccini alfredo. This dinner was one of the most delectable
meals we’ve ever had!! After this amazing meal we had yet another contest. This
time it was a water balloon toss! The first winners were the Dopeys, then the
Bashfuls came out on top for the main attraction. We had extra balloons and it
was time for WAR!! Since we were already wet, we all decided to go for a swim
in Bear Lake. We used this lake expedition to bathe ourselves in the crisp Utah
water. We dried off about an hour after swimming, having chicken fights, making
tidal waves, and admiring the sunset casting over the Utah mountains.
Everyone changed out of their wet clothes and circled around
for a sing-a-long. This one was special because Harrison Parrott (eagle scout)
made an excellent fire for us to gather around. During our sing along, we had a
fascinating interruption of a flash mob of the local campers around our
campsite. We continued our beautiful melodies after shooing them away. We then
finished off the night with some yummy s’mores and some solid tarp talks.
